Thanks to the high mechanical strength and the high minimum yield strength, cold-formed hollow sections are ideal for steel construction. They are used as solid support structures in construction and civil engineering, are popular in mechanical engineering because of their excellent static properties and are also used in cars and even aircraft.

Cold formed means that the hollow sections are produced at room temperature. The split ring with the raw material is clamped in the machine and using various tools is shaped to the desired section and seam-welded longitudinally. They are therefore known as welded hollow sections or precision steel tubes. On request, the inner seam can be removed during production. This process is known as internal seam de-burring. At Wuppermann Poland, the outer seam is removed anyway during production.

The hollow sections can have a higher residual stress due to cold forming, which could be disadvantageous under high working loads. On the other hand, cold-formed hollow sections have a much higher accuracy as regards their geometry/wall thickness and are visually attractive and much easier to handle due to the accurate and smooth surfaces.

The main advantage of cold-formed hollow sections is the production process itself. The production of round, square, rectangular and oval tubes is possible with almost any material at a relatively low price. The savings are about 10-20% compared to hot-formed sections made according to DIN EN 10210.

Cold formed hollow sections are defined in European standard EN 10219, precision steel tubes in EN 10305.
